This book has gotten many bad reviews and it made me lenient to pick it up. Is it anything like the musical? Or will I be disappointed?

You will be disappointed by the book.
I see fans greatly enjoying the musical and I see such cute fanart that sadly, it's hard for me to enjoy because I can't see the characters as they do. They're such assholes in the book.

If you really really really enjoyed the musical, you probably shouldn't read this book. Not only are the characters incredibly different in the book vs. in the play, but the overall tone is, in my opinion, completely different

The book and musical are severely different, but I enjoyed the book. If you're more interested in the Squip than the secondary characters, then the book will probably be better than if you are the other way around.
Both have relatively the same atmosphere.
In the book, the Squip is not actually the villain and I don't think this book directly has one. If you're willing to sacrifice Chloe/"Brooke"/Michael/Christine character development for Squip character development then the book will probably be enjoyable for you.

I'm currently on about 30% of it and it's much the same plot as the musical, but the characters aren't as deep or well thought-out, in my opinion. You can read the other reviews; it's pretty sexist, and Jeremy's sole purpose is to get some. (When he doesn't, he watches porn with Michael.) I'd say read it if you like, but don't read it if you're under 15-16 because it's pretty explicit so far.

I loved the musical so I picked up the book and it was so sexist. The squip was the only character I really enjoyed. I wouldn't recommend.

I think the bad reviews are from fans of the musical. The Musical is based off of the book, but many major details have been changed to make the show more "showworthy". The entire ending has been changed, and the characters have completely different personalities in some cases. But I love this book, because it seems almost like a different story, but also, if you are easily offended, don't read.

I just finished the book and I saw the musical first (online video). It's the entire reason I picked up the book.
The plot in the musical is vastly improved, imo. Jeremy is a sexist prick. The book is full of dangerous examples of toxic masculinity. The characters aren't as interesting. I feel like I didn't read the same book as people below me who say it's similar or that they loved it. The squip is the only character I actually enjoyed and I like what they did with it in the musical more, so I'd say skip it, you'll probably be disappointed. But if you're willing to read it anyway, at least it's short.

A production of the musical is coming to the town I'm in....I've never heard of it or the book before. Should I read the book first? I see a lot of people say they are both very different so I'm just curious what you guys think....

The book is great in my opinion, so may funny bits, but the ending lets it down..

I was a fan of the musical before reading the book and honestly the book just made me love the story more. While it is quite different to the musical it still had the same quirky, fun feel to it.
