I would say that it depends. B2F certainly grabbed me right from the beginning--it opens on a very grim, absolutely terrible scene *about* to unfold, and Buehlman did an incredible job developing a sense of dread and anxiety. It's very character-focused, so the plot is a bit of a mystery/slow burn kind of deal for both you and the characters. But the character development starts right out of the gate. This is an old question, but it really is an absolutely brilliant fantasy/historical horror and I definitely recommend it if you have no read it yet.

Yes, it does grab you from the very first page. Once you see the name Thomas, you will know it has started ;)

Yes, its very hard for me to sit and read something but this grabbed me right away. Plus the grumpy old man and weird child dynamic always grabs me (ex Witcher, Last of Us, etc)

Yes and yes. The very first part set the stage for the story, and I don't think I quite realized the significance of the first few pages right off the bat as I listened to them (listened to the book on Audible), but it all came together and made sense rather quickly. When Thomas and the girl are introduced, you are on your way, the story builds from there. It grabs you and does not let go until the last page.
