First, she didn't actually have a location for her mother, and she could never actually say where she was. Second, her mother's constant changibility--the voice took up accents and ideas, and intonations. Third, and the most telling, the fact that she heard her mother's voice at random times, and kept trying to hear her own voice, choose herself. (less)
