Margaret Goodlin

Can anyone recommend other books that are as good? LOVED this book. Have read several by this author, but would like to read more WW II books.

Sandra I recommend the Book Thief even though it is a young adult. WWl book is The Summer Before the War. I liked The Nightingale because some of it took place in the Basque area of the Pyrennes and my son and family lived close by as the time.
Amanda up North I loved this one, too. I read quite a lot of WWII historical fiction.
All the Light We Cannot See is highly comparable in gorgeous prose, set in WWII France, under siege and occupation of Germans.
Lilac Girls is very good.
I personally didn't care for The Nightingale as much. It was good enough reading, but there were several errors, inconsistencies, and anachronisms. It felt more like the author had an agenda and was using WWII as her carrier. It's popular though.
Unbroken is also very good, brutal but inspiring (it's a biographical true story.) The WWII events are set in Japan and the South Pacific, rather than Europe.
Salt to the Sea, by Ruta Sepetys is an incredibly well researched WWII historical fiction. I highly recommend. You'll find it in the YA section at the library.
The Book Thief also outstanding.
I loved the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
I DO NOT recommend Those Who Save Us. I wrote a review on why.
Gayle All the Light You Cannot See; Lilac Girls; Secrets of a Charmed Life; The Nightingale; Life After Life; Unbroken;
Kelly BENEATH A SCARLET SKY by Mark Sullivan. I've read a bunch but this one is the best. Given I haven't finished Everyone Brave is Forgiven yet but I am loving it so far - around 60% in.
Christie Beneath a Scarlet Sky is great. It takes place in Italy and is the true story of a young Italian who, after Milan is bombed by the Germans, joins the German Army to avoid being drafted to the front lines. He becomes the driver for a high ranked officer & what he witnessed first-hand is incredible. Fantastic story, will bring you to tears.
Marilyn Lonon The Invisible Bridge.
Alex David I love Everyone Brave is Forgiven and The Summer Before the War (WWI novel). Try The Sea Change by Joanna Rossiter - a WWII novel set in England and 1970's tsunami in India. The writing is fantastic. Superb weaving of love and loss tales. Also, you may try out my novel, Salomé - a WWII novel set in Cairo and Jerusalem. A medic discovers a dangerous secret about his father a mute refugee on his Cairene estate. Good luck.
Holly If you want to read about London, etc., during the Blitz, I recommend Blackout and All Clear by Connie Willis. She is a sci-fi writer, so you will have to put up with some time travel, which I do not find off-putting but some do. Her books are tremendously well researched and I find them fascinating. I've re-read this series several times. And I second All the Light You Cannot See, The Book Thief, and The Nightingale. Also a short-lived BBC TV show Bletchley Circle, which is set shortly after WWII and anything you can find about Alan Turing and the other code-breakers.
Stephanie I highly recommend the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear. Starts before World War and most recent book is the Battle of Dunkirk time frame. Great historical facts and very interesting read. First book is called Maisie Dobbs
Robert Bailey WWII fascinates me because my father fought in North Africa. That said, I almost never read books anymore. I listen to them on CD. The actor who read "Everyone Brave is Forgiven" was top notch. "The Chilbury Ladies Choir: A Novel" is also set at the start of WWII in a small English near the coast. (It's sort of like "Mrs. Miniver" meets "Atonement.") It is quasi-epistolary and worked well as an audiobook with a cast of talented male and female actors. I also just listened to "Princess Elizabeth's Spy" and I am preparing to listen to the 1st in the 'Maggie Hope' series, "Mr. Churchill's Secretary." These books seem lighter in tone (almost like 'Nancy Drew: All Grown Up and Fighting the Nazis!' ) The reader is excellent and the book kept me entertained on my commute to work.
