Goodreads asked Dawn Malone:

How do you get inspired to write?

Dawn Malone Years ago, I read a great book by Heather Sellers called Chapter After Chapter. She wrote that she always gathers a few similar books to the one she wants write, whether those books are similar in tone, theme, share the same genre, etc. When she needs inspiration or gets stuck, she spends time with her 'wise guides', looking at how those authors end their chapters, reading passages aloud, deconstructing a chapter, retyping sections, anything to solve a specific problem she runs into in her own novel.
I love this advice, and it works for me. Selecting a few mentor books keeps me on track when I'm ready to write, and gets me moving again when I stall.
