Dawn Malone worked as a newspaper reporter before publishing middle grade novels. Her stories have been published in Highlights for Children, Pockets, as well as other children’s magazines, and she’s a contributor to Chicken Soup for the Soul Think Positive for Kids. While I loved the work environment of a daily newspaper, I found writing about other people's ideas limiting. A journalist who longed to write fiction was not a good match. I do think that you can write yourself into a…moreI don't really believe in 'writer's block'; there never seems to be a shortage of topics to write about. I do think that you can write yourself into a corner, and depending on your story, have limited directions in which to go. When that happens, it's usually because I haven't given that section of the plot enough forethought. I'm not big on creating an in-depth outline before I write, but everyone can benefit from some. If I do get stuck on a chapter, it's short-term. Taking a break to read a similar book, whether it's the same genre, tone, subject, etc., helps me get back into the writing groove. (less)
