Read great writing! We learn so much as writers by reading, both in the genres we want to write, and outside those genres. Also, I highly recommend having your work critiqued by a professional. Critique groups and partners are great, but to make sure your work is ready for review by an agent or editor, hire a professional and learn from the critique they offer. As a writing coach, I've seen writers hone their craft and take their work to the next level over and over following critiques and instruction. Writing well takes work and investment.
