WOW! After reading all of the reviews of those who have actually read the book, I'm wondering if I ought to just pitch it and not waste my time? I just started The Atlantis Gene, but if it's just going to drive me to drink.... maybe I'll pick something else?

Alyssa Seholm This story is definitely worth a read, but the next book in the series is called "The Atlantis Plague" - so, it is the origin story of a plague that is going to rock the world.

I didn't find it dark, but it will have it's ups and downs. It's not all rainbows and sunshine, but it does a good job of never letting you lose hope. I want to say more, but I don't want to give any spoilers. I will note that I listened to the audible version and recommend that way if you are capable. I hope that you gave it a try (or at least are willing to eventually). :)
Rebecca Avergas Depends on each person, but I just finished the book and loved it.
Bob After reading some reviews, I almost didn't read The Atlantis Gene, but decided to go ahead and read it. The chapters are short, and the narrative shifts back and forth between the various story lines, but you'll quickly figure out what's going on and how the story lines go together. I actually really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the second one. Do yourself a favor--read it!
Brian I found the pacing to be confusing in the beginning, because the chapters are way too short, but once I got about halfway through, I got used to it and wound up enjoying it. Some of the stylistic criticisms are valid, but in my opinion are a little too hyperbolically used by people who wanted to give the book a bad rating.
Wendy Beckman I have not finished the Atlantis Gene yet, but I would say that it drives you to think. My only challenge is in the shifting story lines: if I can't read it in a good solid chunk of time, I lose track of who's who. That's one good thing about reading it with Kindle: I can search the book easily.

From a writing standpoint, it's clear that this is one of AGR's first books. It could use some editing, but that will improve with time (I hope). For example, the diary left behind by one of the characters has descriptions that someone in a crisis mode would not write down. It is a too-easy way for the author to tell the readers the backstory. I have never cared for that much exposition. It's what author Hallie Ephron calls, "Well, as you know, Bob...."
