I have to ask, are you a veteran or just a damn good researcher? I myself am a 12 year army veteran. I am also a bit curious as to why you chose Nigeria instead of Afghanistan or Iraq which is much more common in military fiction.

I am neither a veteran (colorblind, Air Force didn't want me) nor a good researcher. What I am is lucky to have veterans as friends who inform me about military life.
I chose Nigeria because the book is set in the 'near future', so I wanted to reference some place where we are not yet fighting. Nigeria is an oil-rich state with messy ethnic conflicts; it is plausible we could deploy troops there someday.
