I've loved the Maisie Dobbs books since the first one. I'm intrigued by the techniques she learned from her guru. Are they based on your personal experiences? I also wonder if you map your novels the way Maisie makes case maps.

Laura, the novels are not based upon personal experience in any way (I have never come across a murder!), although I think it's fair to say that being an observer of people is a trait that belongs to most writers. I do not do case maps, though I do use poster-sized paper to keep track of plots and characters and my research needs.

Maisie has really come a long way since your first portrayal of her. During the Munich book, she pulled out her famous murder board (or, wallpaper piece), but did not really use it. That made me think about the complexity of pulling together a murder mystery. What is your format? Do you keep biographies of each character? How do you keep up with the growth of each main character, while creating new one off characters
