Christopher Rice:
I dearly loved The Heavens Rise and I am looking forward to The Vines (10/21/14). Do you consider the genre of these to be supernatural thriller or paranormal romance? Also, in regards to The Flame (11/11/14) which is erotica, will you continue to write in this genre as well or was this a one time "test the waters" kind of adventure?
Christopher Rice
I consider the genre of both books you mentioned to be "supernatural thriller". My first instinct is to call them horror. But as a label horror has come to be less associated with Stephen King's dark versatility and more associated with nihilism and relentless torture. As for THE FLAME, it's actually not erotica explicitly. It's erotic romance, which comes with a different set of expectations on the part of reader. While heavy on the sex, for sure, it also promises a happy ending with gratifying new committed relationships between certain characters. That's no easy feat for a writer, crafting a convincing happy ending. But so far I'm loving the challenge. As for what comes next, this is an exciting time for me, packed with experimentation. THE FLAME will introduce a set of characters and a world I will revisit in two subsequent novellas in spring 2015.

Hi, Chris. "The Snow Garden" and "A Density of Souls" are my favorite Christopher Rice books. Being under contract and writing for deadlines, how long do you have to write a novel? And how many drafts do you write before anyone else sees the manuscript? I look forward to THE VINES. I love your books.
