P. Aaron Potter Past time that we honored Ray Bradbury with a pick. Also, each of these morsels is so individually distinct i can't wait for the fights about which stories work and which don't.

message 2: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome I can see the results. Nya nya.

message 3: by Michele (new)

Michele Can't we all? I see them too.

message 4: by Andy (new)

Andy Any of these would be great.

The Martian is new, that is often controversial because of access issues. Some others are series, and I am hit or miss with Phillip K Dick.

Wow that sounds like I have concerns. I really don't, I will probably read all of these anyway!

message 5: by Paul (new)

Paul Perry Some great books here - Consider Phlebas, Altered Carbon and, of course, Do Androids... are all fab - but I have to go for The Martian Chronicles; read it years ago and picked up an old paperback copy recently.

message 6: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome Um, I tried to add Alastair Reynolds's The Prefect. Maybe I did it wrong.

message 7: by Andy (new)

Andy Tamahome wrote: "Um, I tried to add Alastair Reynolds's The Prefect. Maybe I did it wrong."

I can see it now.

message 8: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome You can't click on it though to see details.

message 9: by Liudvikas (new)

Liudvikas I know it wont happen, but if I could read Alistair Reynolds "House of Suns" as a club pick, I would be so happy.

message 10: by Tamahome (last edited Feb 04, 2014 01:26PM) (new)

Tamahome I was thinking of that too, but I haven't read it. I know The Prefect is good. I guess you could write it in. :)

message 11: by Paul (new)

Paul Perry I think that might split the Alistair Reynolds vote

message 12: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome Doh.

message 13: by Andy (new)

Andy In Tom's post I put a comment with links to the write in ballots. I will keep it updated daily or so if any others are added.

message 14: by Mell (new)

Mell I thought I would throw in Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. It is a novella but why the heck not. Read it anyway people

message 15: by Pixie (new)

Pixie Roadside Picnic is pretty good, actually. My vote is for Consider Phlebas; it's past time I read some Iain M. Banks, and I'm fascinated by the idea of the Culture.

I started Altered Carbon years ago, and Lem'd it. Did not find it engaging at all. I did finish the Long Earth, but alas, it was not great. The rest of the choices look tasty, though.

message 16: by Dustin (new)

Dustin I'll drop Armored out there. Would be interesting to read an anthology. Doesn't hurt that I already own it.

message 17: by Art (new)

Art I'm going with The Long Earth because I've had a copy sat on my shelf for almost a year and this might make me me finally get to it

I agree with you on The Long Earth - good but not great - but I do love Altered Carbon. The only caveat I'd have is that it is *very* adult.

I can't recommend the culture books enough; my personal faves are Look to Windward, Surface Detail,Use of Weapons and Matter. I've yet to read the final one, The Hydrogen Sonata, possibly because I know it is the final one and I'm putting off the feeling of loss.

message 19: by Kristina (new)

Kristina I think Altered Carbon sounds exciting.

message 20: by Tom (new)

Tom Merritt Mod
Altered Carbon does have some pretty sexy timez and serious violence. Not for the kids.

message 21: by Tamahome (last edited Feb 05, 2014 07:51AM) (new)

Tamahome May contain balloon metaphors. Best first two chapters ever though.

message 22: by Rob (new)

Rob Read Martian Chron. 20 years ago, probably due for a re-read. Own Androids, but never read so probably should be voting for that. Altered Carbon, however, sounds like too much fun and must vote for that.

AndrewP Paul 'Pezski' wrote: "I've yet to read the final one, The Hydrogen Sonata, possibly because I know it is the final one and I'm putting off the feeling of loss. "

Me too! It's been sitting on my bookshelf for a year and I cant face reading it knowing there will be no more :(

Paul Perry AndrewP wrote: "Me too! It's been sitting on my bookshelf for a year and I cant face reading it knowing there will be no more :( "

A genuinely great writer, and a top bloke. I was lucky enough to meet him a couple of times.

I am so tempted to attend this http://www.thelbt.org/celebration-lif... but it's on my (and my partner's) birthday weekend and we've already made plans.

message 25: by Joe Informatico (new)

Joe Informatico Roadside Picnic, Martian Chronicles, and Consider Phlebas are all great picks, but I've read them all within the last 12 months. So I'm leaning towards Altered Carbon, because I haven't read a cyberpunk book in a long time.

message 26: by Carter (new)

Carter McNeese Voted for Altered Carbon. It is outside my comfort zone, so why not.

Had people telling me for years that I should read so-called cyberpunk. Maybe this is the push I need.

message 27: by Alan (new)

Alan I'm hoping for a book I haven't read yet so I voted for Altered Carbon.

Whenever we've done a couple classic F&SF picks in a row, I kind of root against the masters so I'd rather wait on Martian Chronicles.

message 28: by Bawa (new)

Bawa Long Earth sounds interesting!

message 29: by Frank (last edited Feb 06, 2014 01:32PM) (new)

Frank Altered Carbon is the best book here with Consider Phlebas a close second, but TMC and Armored have special places in my heart for very different reasons. The Dragon Never Sleeps is an awesome book by a writer no one ever thinks about as writing sci-fi. And of course WADOES is a good book, but nothing like the movie, it's not a long book though if memory serves. There are better PKD books.

message 30: by AndrewP (new)

AndrewP Why is Altered Carbon on the poll 3 times?

message 31: by Rob (last edited Feb 06, 2014 02:36PM) (new)

Rob Mod
AndrewP wrote: "Why is Altered Carbon on the poll 3 times?"

People REALLY want to read it..Also assuming people in a book club read is a mistake.

message 32: by Paul (new)

Paul Perry Frank wrote: "There are better PKD books. "

I'm with Tom; if we read a PKD book it really, really should be The Man in the High Castle

message 33: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome Instead of Altered Carbon, we should read Altered Carbon.

message 34: by Alan (new)

Alan Tamahome wrote: "Instead of Altered Carbon, we should read Altered Carbon."
Perhaps, but how about reading Altered Carbon?

message 35: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome Now is Armor there twice, or does Armored mean the John Joseph Adams anthology?

message 36: by Paul (new)

Paul Perry *suspects that the write-in experiment, whilst entertaining, may not be repeated...*

message 37: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu Since everyone wants to read Altered Carbon, we should also read his fantasy, The Steel Remains sometimes soon in the near future.

message 38: by Isaiah (new)

Isaiah Kevin wrote: "Since everyone wants to read Altered Carbon, we should also read his fantasy, The Steel Remains sometimes soon in the near future."

I second that. Especially since the last book comes out this year, I'd love to do a reread!

message 39: by Tom (new)

Tom Merritt Mod
I have a feeling people see the write-in box in a couple cases and think they're supposed to write-in their choice from above, hence the multiple carbons.

message 40: by Camilla (new)

Camilla I really want to read The Marian Chronicles! The only thing I really don't want to read is Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, and that's because I just read it.

message 41: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome I think Tom's gonna veto you all and pick Tuf Voyaging.

Spoilers.

message 43: by Jason (jasonb) (new)

Jason (jasonb) I totally want to re-read Altered Carbon. Great noir detective sci-fi book!! But if it's vetoed for something else no worries!!

message 44: by Paul (new)

Paul Perry Jason wrote: "I totally want to re-read Altered Carbon. Great noir detective sci-fi book!! But if it's vetoed for something else no worries!!"

I think it might win the vote - in triplicate!

message 45: by Tamahome (last edited Feb 12, 2014 07:11AM) (new)

Tamahome Eh. I hope The Long Earth doesn't win. I heard it was mediocre. Unless someone that's actually read it wants to chime in.

message 46: by Darren (new)

Darren This list needs some Altered Carbon.

message 47: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome I put on pants just like anybody else, but then I go out and make hit books.

message 48: by AndrewP (new)

AndrewP I'm surprised nobody has added Like a Mighty Army to this list. I'm probably going to be reading it regardless.

Ugh. I keep thinking I should love Banks' Culture novels, and I do love how each book is brimming with scifi ideas and cultures, but I just can't relate to the characters. The humans are too pampered, and the ships are too godlike.
