Cheri Anyone want to share why they nominated what they did?

I put up Parties in Congress because I was talking to a friend of mine about it and got a massive urge to read it again. So many great lines. My favorite will always be Seduction of Moxie but I want to read this one again.

"I have an infection."

message 2: by Cheri (new)

Cheri To be honest, there are no less than 5 books listed that I've either read and enjoyed a lot or want to read.

message 3: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean I am excited by Broken Trails, even though it has not yet been released as an Amazon ebook yet.

I totally enjoyed Life Rewired and The Crush.

Haven't read Karin Kallmaker in ages, so Love By the Numbers would be a good escuse to do so soon.

message 4: by Sunny (new)

Sunny There are several on this list that sound like fun reads. I'm torn, but I think right now I'm leaning toward Parties in Congress.

Is Broken Trails the same as the online fic called Iditarod or is it a sequel to that one?

message 5: by Cheri (new)

Cheri It's the same but totally redone so not the same, really.

message 6: by Sunny (new)

Sunny Hmmm. Now I'm a little more undecided.

message 7: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Hard choices this month. I should have put up Wedding Bell Blues since there's a good selection of humorous books.

message 8: by Blu (new)

Blu Oh my gosh, I'm in a similar situation Cheri! I suspect some of these titles will appear on future polls, making them "the same, but totally redone so not the same, really" ;-)

message 9: by Katy (new)

Katy I read HuntedHunted ( a couple years ago. It has a great subtext about discrimination, and a lesbian character who just kicks total butt. All Cheryl Rainfield's books tend to have a lesbian character, sometimes as the MC, sometimes not. I adore her stuff.

message 10: by Alena (new)

Alena I voted for SXM, but totally expect my vote to change at least three times before this poll ends. Lots of good choices this month!

message 11: by -Lisa W (new)

-Lisa W -Hurricane What a great list. I wouldn't know how to choose. A lot of these books have been on my to-read list for a long time. It's so hard to find time to read in the summer though. I hope eventually I can actually partake in this BOTM thing! :)

message 12: by f (new)

f I voted for Trick of the Dark because my library had the audiobook. And I like Val McD, although tragically she has not done the audio herself - it's English not Scottish.

message 13: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I've still not read any of her work. I keep meaning to...

message 14: by Cari (new)

Cari Hunter I've gone for Val because so many of the reviews for this one complained that there were lesbians in it and that pissed me right off. Add more lesbians, that's what I say!

message 15: by Katy (new)

Katy Cari wrote: "I've gone for Val because so many of the reviews for this one complained that there were lesbians in it and that pissed me right off. Add more lesbians, that's what I say!"

Whut? People have the audacity to complain that there are *gasp* LESBIANS in a book? Like they're such a rare creature, like a unicorn, that putting them into a book is somehow making said book unrealistic or something? GAH. That's what I've particularly loved about Cheryl Rainfield's books; she's happy to provide a diverse cast, and often teen girls learning who they are, or who are easily accepting of who they are. Nina Post does the same in her latest book Extra Credit Epidemic, where the MC is a young lesbian.

message 16: by Cari (new)

Cari Hunter There are similar reviews for the book I'm reading at the moment (I won't name it so I don't spoil it!) but a few folks were most disconcerted by a midpoint revelation regarding the sexuality of the main character. Y'know, reactions along the lines of: "I liked her until I realised she was gay!"

There are some fucking numbskulls in this world.

message 17: by Katy (new)

Katy SMH

message 18: by Cari (new)

Cari Hunter Really makes me want to comment on their reviews: "I liked you, till I realised you were a twat."

message 19: by Cheri (new)

Cheri That would be fantastic. Please do. And then share links.

message 20: by f (new)

f Cheri wrote re Val McDermid: "I've still not read any of her work. I keep meaning to..."

I like HER, no real idea about her work, so I thought I should give it a go :-)

message 21: by Cab (new)

Cab Cari wrote: "Really makes me want to comment on their reviews: "I liked you, till I realised you were a twat.""

Please please do that.

message 22: by Cab (new)

Cab I wanted to vote for Hunted but I need it to be an ebook. Ok I don't "need" it to be I "want" it to be.

message 23: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Ha! It takes me a quarter of the book to remember how to turn pages. :-)

message 24: by Sunny (new)

Sunny Yes, Cari, pleeeease do that! I wonder if all the people that balked at suddenly finding a lesbian in their book would have a complete meltdown if they were told the author was a lesbian too.

I just voted for Parties in Congress because I'm in the mood for something funny. But I don't think I would be upset if any of the books topping the list win the vote.

message 25: by Pat (new)

Pat Bane I noticed there were 3 votes for Broken Trails but now only 2.

My vote can be bought, just mentioning that.

message 26: by Katy (new)

Katy Cab wrote: "I wanted to vote for Hunted but I need it to be an ebook. Ok I don't "need" it to be I "want" it to be."

Hunted is available as an e-book.

message 27: by Katy (new)

Katy Cari wrote: "Really makes me want to comment on their reviews: "I liked you, till I realised you were a twat.""

HAHAHAHAHAHAH!! That's a really good way to start a GR war, though.... You COULD flag the review or comment for hate speech, though...

message 28: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean Pat wrote: "I noticed there were 3 votes for Broken Trails but now only 2.

I switched my vote to Trick of the Dark. It's a revenge vote against the twats.

message 29: by Cari (new)

Cari Hunter Yeah, not keen to kick off a GR war, not when I have a couple of books on here that would be oh so easy to kill off with malicious ratings! I like to think that a person who posts such a review is simply showing themselves up. OMG, am I taking the moral high ground? Unheard of!

Ferox obviously doesn't remember but we have read one of McDermid's novels, A Place of Execution, but none of her earlier gayer novels with Kate Brannigan. She's a very decent writer.

message 30: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch I voted for Lynn galli because I love her books, and this is the new one I have yet to read :-) also this is the first time I have voted in the poll :-)

message 31: by Cheri (new)

Cheri The first of many, I hope!

message 32: by nancyjean (new)

nancyjean The poll commentary is some of my favorite...

message 33: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch :-D oh definitely!
but I never suggest a book for the poll, though i should start doing that to lol I don't ignore your emails honest! I just never know what book to suggest ;-)

message 34: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Carrie wrote: "but I never suggest a book for the poll, though i should start doing that to lol I don't ignore your emails honest! I just never know what book to suggest ;-)"

I'm glad you clarified that you don't ignore my emails. I was feeling pretty badly about that. :-P

message 35: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch Hehe
I definitely want to be more involved :-) I'm just a tad lazy so I promise to suggest a book next time! As I do read quite a lot :-)

Also when is the June BOTM hangout happening? I haven't read that book yet, but I will, I have midnight in Orlando that I need to read to ;-)

message 36: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Midnight in Orlando will only take you a couple of hours.

We're going to be shooting for the 29th for the hangout. Someone was going to check the GCLS schedule to see if there was anything that we couldn't miss at noon CST.

Also, who can figure out the timezone thing for Dallas at noon CST? You all know I fail at time conversions...

message 37: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch Cool ill start reading it soon, then miles to go :-)

Awesome got a few days still to read them,

Yer Im not great at time zones, tho google has been accurate for me :-)

message 38: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I still manage to screw up with google. I prefer to just trust someone else. Usually.

message 39: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch Haha! well i think The UK is six hours ahead of Dallas so it will be six pm in England when it's noon in Dallas :-) I have a wold clock on my phone so i will trust that, or you can ask Cari Hunters Mrs ;-) she was right about the last hangout lol

message 40: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I'm thinking we should do noon in Milwaukee (or Chicago) since that's what we usually do. I'll just be in Dallas this time.

message 41: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch I hate time zones! Lol ok I'm going to check this out :-) though I wouldn't count on me :-) ill see what everyone else has ta say

message 42: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch Ok noon in Dallas is the same as Milwaukee and Chicago so the UK is still 6hours ahead, I think that's correct

message 43: by Sunny (new)

Sunny I think Dallas is on Central time anyway, so the time would be the same as always. (only right now it's CDT instead of CST)

message 44: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch That's right! It's so confusing :-S

message 45: by Cheri (new)

Cheri We'll take a vote and believe whichever has the most. Sounds like a great idea, to me!

message 46: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch Well I'm with Sunny! It's the times are the same for Dallas
You just confuse people Cheri with saying CST instead of CDT :-P

message 47: by Cheri (new)

Cheri I does confuse me so I just pretend they're the same thing and ignore the D.

Awesome! And it looks like we may be torturing folks on the hangout with BBQ. YAY!

message 48: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch That's not fair! ;-) British weather sucks! And I'm like 6 hours ahead so it will be dinner time for me LOL

message 49: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Mmmmm. You could make some British favorites like black pudding and spotted dick to tease us with.

message 50: by TheGooch (new)

TheGooch Well spotted dick isn't a favourite of mine! ;-) sorry could not resist haha!
But I may have to have black pudding :-D love that stuff
