But wait, when I'm reading more than one book at a time or, heaven forbid, more than three (some ebooks) I use a lock of hair given to me by my first lover to remember the ebook place, a leaf found at the peak of Mt. Everest for my second paper book, my librarian's birth certificate for my third paper book and a glowing ember to mark my place in the montly magazine I receive.

Use author's Awesome holographic 3D winking blinking bookmark for "The Stillness of Time Travel" after I lost a years-long-struggled-for cheque from MegaCorp Bell, and library loan receipt tape until got more winky blinkies. Kobo keeps eBooks.

My kindle holds it for me. If it's an actual book, I use homemade bookmarks that my daughter and I made together to get he excited about reading.

I don't keep track of where I am. I open to a page that looks interesting or about where I left off, reading random bits from it and piecing together the story when I think I've read all/most of it.
Paperclips work pretty well for me, but I also use bookmarks.

I use those post-it notes that are transparent and come in different colours, so that I can note specific passages I want to come back to, or quote, and keep tabs on endnotes, too.

Exactly! Wow, you're really hitting this spot on. For reals, I love books, and I love to read. But I can't find the problem with dog earring.
7% dogear their books so far?!?! I'm feeling slightly ill just thinking about it. I can hardly watch someone on the bus dog-earing a book without wanting to walk over and take the book away from them. :P
Cute poll, but it really hurt to choose the option that had "sitting" misspelled: "When I don't finish the book in one siting I usually end it at a chapter and use ether a bookmark, a postcard or a post-it." :)
When I was little, my mum always told me to read from where I remember I left off, even if it meant I reread some of the parts. I guess it just stuck with me. And I remember page numbers most of the time. So no bookmarks for me :)

Darcy, Megan, you are weakening the book's spine, so if you want other people to be able to enjoy the book, yes, you're being awful. If you believe that books are treasures to be shared, you won't dog-ear and you will 'break' the spine as little as possible. If you think books are like underpants, meant for one owner and then disposal, go ahead and use them as kindling for a fire.

I once told a stranger on a train to stop dog-earing their book as it was driving me mad! Fortunately, they didn't take offence (nor offer to do a criss-cross murder).I use leather bookmarks, which I started collecting as a child as mementos of places I visited (museums, stately homes, etc.) and should have stopped doing so when I became a vegetarian, but didn't (hypocrite!). I now have an uncounted number of the things and often select one that matches thematically the book I'm reading, e.g., a bookmark from the town of Pendle, site of a 17thC "witch craze" when reading The Lancashire Witches.
When placing the bookmark, I turn the embossed side to the page I'm on, so I know which side to look to when taking the book up again.
Despite all this, I did manage to persuade a woman to marry me!

I use ebooks, but before that i would use whatever i had on me, business cards, envelopes etc and even tissues, but i would never ever dog ear book pages... unless it was the phonebook :)

I have a feeling that people who read enough to belong to goodreads use a variety of place-saving tools. Agree with #49. However, as a product of pre-Vatican II Catholic education, I would never dog-ear a book, and not only that, to this day I suffer temporary paralysis if I even think of hi-lighting or underlining.

I use this awesome book mark that my best friend made for me for Christmas. It is made from green, orange, and gray fabric and looks like a shirt and tie, and I love it! Thanks Stacey!
I'm a high school librarian, and in an attempt to keep the students from bending the pages, I order the READ bookmarks from ALA and give them out for free. ALA is one of the few places that offers bookmarks that actually appeal to teens.
It so depends on what I am reading! I have a Kindle, so that tracks my place in each book; I read online, but usually I just leave the webpage open til I finish on those. . .When I read physical books, it depends on the book, where I am, my surroundings, and how much of a hurry I'm in.
Scraps of paper, fancy bookmarks (several family members somehow only retain the fact that 'Serena likes books' so I get lots of really random books and bookmarks), homemade bookmarks (including some I've discovered in library books),a heavy bookweight I got from my mum, cardboard, a pen, a pamphlet or business card, my finger (hey, if you have to leave a waiting room in a hurry), remembering the page number, etc. I've even used a thin paperback as a bookmark in a big hardcover, when I only have the one bookmark. Seriously, just about anything can be a bookmark, in a pinch.
I keep a small basket of bulky bookmarks - metal ones, and ones that hook over the spine - and an old teacup of all the other bookmarks I own and can locate, but I end up 'in a pinch' fairly frequently anyway.
I never dog-ear pages, though - it bothers me. I also don't use the dust jacket that way - it seemed convenient, and I tried it for a while, but it looks funny, to me, and it is easy to lose your place, as well.
Also, when I'm at home, a fair amount of the time, the couch or nightstand or counter becomes my 'bookmark' - I just leave the book propped open on the nearest surface, ready to take it back up whenever. Normally it doesn't take me long enough to pick it back up again for it to even make an impression in the spine.
This was a way too long answer, but it is a complex question! Fun one, though - fun to see what everyone's chosen.
I use the corner of an envelope with the stamp & post mark. Cut the envelope's upper right corner off at an angle!
This totally depends on the book. Sometimes I dog-ear (yes I'm guilty - but only on old paperbacks that I get from Goodwill)
Or I might use random pieces of paper (magazine inserts are easiest - you know those "subscribe now!" cards, or get "this" for free/discount -- for instance I've had the same TRY KINERASE ad with Courtney Cox in my copy of The Time Traveler's Wife for YEARS... maybe that's why I can't get through that book.)
Sometimes I'll leave the book open (face down) in my bedside table drawer (or the nearest surface).
I use the dust jacket for hardback books (within reason, Stephen King books are usually too thick).
I received a "fancy" metal bookmark for Christmas from a friend, but I don't use it that often because it's so bulky.
I also have a few of those tassel bookmarks (you know, the ones you collected in jr. high), but I can never find them when I need them.

I'm also intrigued by the people who are creative enough to tape a ribbon to the book spine.
My cd player, ipod or iTunes keeps track of audiobooks (or I'll try to remember the disc/track number when I stop)
Oh, and of course my Kindle keeps track when I'm e-reading, but I prefer the book in my hand if I'm going to read it myself.
As most of the books I read are not the classics, I dog-ear. I make my own bead and string bookmarks as I hate anything thick between the pages (it ruins the spine) but I tend to get a bit pissy with it swinging around, that bothers me. I have, however, found that Post-It tabs work better than Post-It notes as the sticky stuff lasts quite a bit longer. But at the end of the day when all is said and done, I'm a dog-ear kinda gal.
I remember the page (good numbers memory) but I usually don't finish all that quickly!

I sometimes read ebooks, but I prefer the ones made of paper.I prefer ebooks for the tech stuff, but as an IT pro I enjoy relaxing with a good old low tech paper book.
I have some bookmarks as they are given for free in the book stores but what I like to use most are post-card sized hard paper flyers from metal bands, these are normally send by extreme metal distros and use to feature quite nice artwork. (yes, I am a metalhead!).
For eBooks a I have proper Acer Netbook. For me it's more convenient as a tables: It's a proper computer with a proper CPU, storage, etc, my ereader supports portrait format and I am not so lazy as not to be able to hold the netbook in a single hand (and I'm fit too!)
ebooks are ok, but i dont actually have one, i downloaded a system on my cell that acts like an ebook though, i read PnP[pride and prejudice] on it and though the story was great, the tiny screen and font ruined it, full sized Ereaders would be awesome though...

Fancy bookmarks to me are the ones that have the tassel or are made out of cloth or are laminated. Recently, I bought two "Fancy" book marks made from postage stamps. :-)
