I usually go by cover and format (paperback/hardcover...), but occasionally I'll look at the publication date.
I add any if I do not own the book , then fix it later , sometimes I even add my edition if it is not encluded .
It really depends on a case by case situation. I like the cover to match the book I read, but I often just pick the prettiest cover instead. I tend pick the english edition, even when I've read the book in Dutch, because I want to use my review to recommend it to my GR friends.Pagecount has to match as well though, because I like the whole update status thing.
I read ebooks almost exclusively now. I've found that the page count in my pc reader never matches the page count on my portable reader even though I'm reading the same book - so page count isn't a reliable test for me. I usually just choose the first return on the search, but I have been known to go back and modify if I find out there are differences later.
I'm exclusively reading Kindle/ebooks books now so if the Kindle edition is there, I pick that but if not, I just add the edition that comes up first. When I was still reading paper books, I just made sure the cover matched.
I agree with JK I don't think it matters as long as you did read it I usually just pick the right cover.
I have to have the same cover. And very often the cover I have is nowhere to be seen. At some point I want to upload a ton of photos.
When I have a book on order from somewhere I just choose any old one, but when the book arrives I choose/fix it to match my ISBN, cover etc and if I'm not too busy I add bookcovers and descriptions when they're missing even to books I read long ago. This is very common with non US/UK fiction that never made it onto Amazon.
Well, not always. I didn't at first, but I do now. I haven't corrected many of my old incorrect editions, not yet anyway.
I usually check the edition by ISBN. Sometimes I check for inaccuracies in the data, but that's mostly it. Since most of my books are romanian, I have to add the edition myself. Not so hard, up to 20 minutes per book. Usually takes less than ten mins.
I always add the exact edition by ISBN number - if it's not there I add it, including Audible ASIN's (which don't seem to get picked up routinely as ISBN's do).
about two of the write-ins:-you CAN actually add multiple editions of the same books, I've done it more than once.
-if you add a translated book you can still "interact" with people browsing the english-language editions, so I don't see why you wouldn't like to add your specific edition.
i usually just type in the ISBN number on the back of the book and do a search that way and make sure i have the correct edition... makes it easier when i look back...
Following up on what surfmadpig said:Adding multiple editions of the same work is easiest if you do the look-up by ISBN, but you also can just browse the other editions until you find the extra one you want. Just make sure NOT to use "switch to this edition" unless you want to use the new one INSTEAD of the old one, rather than in addition to.
Multi-language interaction tends to work well only if the translation has been merged into the original edition. This is one of my primary librarian projects, and lots of others are working on it too.
99% of the time I match ISBN numbers to get the exact edition. I do have a few books that are book club editions and don't have ISBN's so have to go by page numbers and cover image to get the closest
Very few NOOKbook editions or Kindle editions in here, so it's kind of difficult to make an exact match. I just pick the first one I come to...but then that irks me when the page numbers don't match up.
Actually, we have thousands and thousands of each, and searching by ASIN (for Kindle) or ISBN (for nookbook/ebook) will often import the edition if it's not in the GR database already. However, page numbering for ebooks is often different from one user to another, based on your individual ebook reader's settings.

When I'm actually reading it, I'm really anal about matching the editions so the pagination will be right. I'll leave it set on the right edition if I'm swapping it.After I'm done, or before I start, sometimes I'll switch to whichever edition has the prettiest cover. ;)
What is up with this poll? Why does it have all the weird options for various totally specific situations?
Oh, I see you can add your own option. Huh.
Oh, I see you can add your own option. Huh.
I was thinking about voting for the Brazillian option, but that was when I thought this poll was a joke. The weird options do make it seem like a joke, right?
silly people, there's a write-your-own-answer choice, that's why it's full of random thingies. the initial options did make sense.
My initial thought was "wait, books have editions?" Then I went through the books I've read for this year to make sure all the editions were exactly accurate.
For most of the books I've shelved I've just gone with the first one, but now I lean more towards picking exactly the right edition. I might have to go back through my 800-odd books and change all of them...
I always try to choose the exact same edition I'm reading, but sometimes it's difficult, especially with the classics. I have some classics that were published from 1899 forward, so those are not necessarily listed in Goodreads. In those cases, I just pick the closest I can find in relation to number of pages etc.
I try my hardest to pick the edition I actually have. That's not always a help, though. A good example is one of the books I'm currently reading. I made sure it my edition - even the same ISBN - however, the page numbers aren't the same. I don't know how that's possible...
Heather, most page numbers on GR come from B&N or Amazon, and are wrong more than half the time.I see three recently-added currently-reading books for you. One seems to have correct page numbers; I corrected the other two (got the correct numbers from WorldCat). If I missed the one you were concerned about, post here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...
I typically just choose the book that looks exactly like the one I'm reading. I wonder if I should choose the edition based on the page number....?
Any advice on this?

Was shown how to fix my problem by clicking on edit next to edition shown. It gives you all versions of book published, I then pick the correct one (paperback) and it give proper version with correct page numbers.Thank you so much.
I try to pick the one that fits the edition that I have. I like to update using page numbers so that should be the same but they usually are if the ISBN are the same. However, if I read a translated book then I usually try to find an English version which has the same book number or same cover :/
Meh, I mostly just choose one with the same cover, or, if I read the book some time ago, just the first edition that appears.
In most cases I try to make sure it's the same edition and have been creating new editions if it's not listed, but where I've added in old books that I've read in the past (that I either borrowed from the library or have since passed on to charity) I've just been selecting a similar edition where I can remember which it was.
Most of my books are on my Nook so I can't search by ISBN, let alone scan it. I did change one though that is in book format to match the proper ISBN number after I had completed it. The books I add are primarily titles are I find while on the train or suggested by a friend so I don't want to forget the book's title or author.
While I'm adding books initially, I usually go with whatever the search first brings up. Sometimes I will go with the cover that matches. Then, as I further expand the details of my shelf (especially if it's a book I'm currently reading), I make sure to find the exact edition of the book. If it's not there, I add it. I think I worry more about this if I'm particularly reading that book, or if I happen to be looking up a book I've read in the past and notice the discrepancies in edition. But if I'm just doing quick initial adds, I'm not usually that particular.
