I refuse to re-read The Scarlet Letter and The Phantom of the Opera! I realize that these are in first and second place, and, by the way, there are others on the list that I refuse to re-read; but really, these two are beyond the pale when it comes to insulting one's intelligence. Give me a book with some real meat in it, something that has actually had an effect on fiction or, Heaven forbid, society itself, such as Wuthering Heights or Ulysses.
