Mary Ann Marlowe is a romance junkie with wanderlust. She’s lived in twelve states and three countries, but she’s called the Charlottesville, Virginia area home for nearly twenty years. She’s held dozens of jobs from university-level French teacher to Wall Street computer programmer, got her black belt in karate, and beat Zelda Breath of the Wild. She loves to pull from her experiences when creating her fictional worlds. When she isn’t writing, she day jobs as a developer, hangs with her two amazing kids, and dreams of travel. She also writes under the name Lorelei Parker.

Cintia,
Thanks for the question! I totally understand the daunting discouragement facing you, but you've got what it takes to do this.

First of all, you should separate "writing" from "publishing" or you're going to psych yourself out. Yes, there are a lot of people who want to get published, but if you want to look at statistics, most people give up before they even get to the publishing starting gate, many because of the very discouragement you're dealing with. Remember, there are very few aspects of publishing you can control, but writing is all yours and only you can do exactly what you do.

Second, if you don't have a writing group, start trying to find people who are at about the same place as you to trade your writing with and encourage one another. Ask any successful writer what keeps them going, and I guarantee you that near or at the top of the list will be their writing community. Every writer wants to quit, hates their words, thinks there's no point to go on--way more often than not. Having a tribe who can tell you to keep going can make the difference between a blank page and a finished chapter.

Third, get involved in writing challenges like Nanowrimo. Camp Nano takes place at various times throughout the year. I try to do these as often as I can. They make me keep writing when I might prefer to take a long nap. And I always prefer to take a long nap. Seek out anything you can find that forces you to shut off the nagging voices in your head and just do it.

Last, try to cut yourself some slack. Writing is a process - sometimes fun, sometimes grueling. Remember that you can always fix terrible words later. You don't have to write a publishable novel with your first draft. Write a little every day even if you think it's total garbage. You may come back to discover it's not that bad. Or just having it on the page might spark new ideas and ways to shape what you have into something more. And then, do it again. Keep writing.

Yes, there are long odds and steep competition, but nobody wins who doesn't show up. Don't self reject. You've got it in you to finish a project.

Good luck!(less)

This was such a fun fast read. JoJo and Cooper are just so cute together with their banter and obvious love for one another. Even though, as the author notes at the start, the HEA is guaranteed and it's obvious these two are end game, it's a fun ride ...more
