"It's a book that defines a whole period in history. As the Great Depression recedes into a time before anyone now living, this book will grow in importance, bearing witness to a time that must not be forgotten."

The Big Sleep (Philip Marlowe, #1)
by
"This (or maybe The Maltese Falcon) is the definitive private eye novel. We do a lot of literature better in the 21st Century than we did in the 20th, but the 1930's were the summit of this genre, and reading in that genre is sort of like time travel."

Johnny Got His Gun

"Trumbo was one of the most important authors of his day, and in this relatively early work, you can see why. For later and better work, though, you'll have to go to the movies. Start with the biopic, "Trumbo."
