The Mists of Avalon (Avalon, #1)
by
"Probably my favorite book of all time, utterly destroyed for the sake of television ratings. Whomever is reponsible should be ashamed."

A Wizard of Earthsea (Earthsea Cycle, #1)
by
"This film was so disgustingly bad, I really don't know why they bothered. No wonder the author refused any involvement."

The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1)
by
"This film wasn't quite so bad. Still not as good as the book by any means, but it stuck far more closely to the original plot than the later installments, so I didn't have as much to complain about :p Brilliant art direction made it visually compelling."

The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, #2)

"Here is where things start to go downhill. Peter Jackson decides he can 'improve' on Tolkien, and the results are wretched."

The Return of the King (The Lord of the Rings, #3)

"And here is where things go from bad to worse! Builds upon the plot mangling in 'The Two Towers'. So horrible..."

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5)
by
"It's funny, with the first 3-4 HP movies, I actually thought the film was better than the book (I have issues with JKR's writing style, but this isn't the place to discuss them). Long story short, I enjoyed this installment of the series quite a bit, and I felt that the film adaption fell short. Still -- Alan Rickman! So it's not a total loss."

Jane Eyre
by
"There have been a few good film adaptations of this novel over the years (my favorite is the 1983 BBC miniseries), and several not so good-verging on terrible; but none of them quite manages to live up to the original."

Wuthering Heights
by
"Similar to my feelings for 'Jane Eyre'; there have been some credible attempts to adapt this novel over the years, some more successful than others, but none of them quite manage to capture the essence of the book."

Howl’s Moving Castle (Howl’s Moving Castle, #1)
by
"I wouldn't precisely say that the film was 'better' than the book in this case, since the film is utterly gorgeous, but it is certainly a very loose adaptation. Beautifully done, however."

you're so right on LOTR and Mists of Avalon (especially Avalon!). I haven't read Howl's Moving Castle but i liked the movie!

Fellowship was the only movie of the trilogy that I even remotely enjoyed, though the book was definitely superior. In the other two the writer/director somehow decided that he could come up with a better plot then Tolkien (?!) and changed so many things I couldn't stand it!Howl's Moving Castle is a gorgeous film, like all of Miyazaki's work, but it's only very loosely based upon Diana Wynne Jones' equally gorgeous novel. In this case I wouldn't quite say that the book is 'better' than the movie, but each is really its own creature.
And as for Mists....ugh. It literally pained me how awful that thing was. They really shouldn't have bothered. ALTHOUGH! It's still not as bad as the Earthsea movie >_< Which reminds me, I have to go add that to this list, as well!
I agree on the LOTR films. However, I still like Howl's Moving Castle both in book and film versions.
