What Members Thought

Still trying to find SF/Fantasy that I will be as crazy about as my grandkids are - this was not it for me! Magical doorways, varmints eating Ursula Monkton, a pond that is the magical "ocean", etc. Just not my bag!!!! And, I know Neil Gaiman is a highly respected SF/Fantasy writer; I am just not smart enough to appreciate it!

The story is a little confusing at first. It started off in the "real world", and then it does a flashback of the main character's childhood that sort of might be fantasy?
It makes me wonder if this whole book was a metaphor somehow or a euphemism because the child main character didn't understand what was going on.
It is still a good story (if it happened the way it was written). And from Gaiman interviews, it looks like the Hempstock family did make appearances in his other works...

It's been a while since I read a book that I loved as much as this one. I think it's made better in the audiobook version by the author doing the voice work (can be dicey sometimes). His voice and cadence add an extra layer of emotion to the story. I rank this with the likes of The Book Thief which I also loved because the narrator of the audiobook did such a fantastic job, in addition to a wonderful story. Looking forward to exploring more of Neil Gaiman's work.
