What an amazing story about a midwife and the mystery in her small town.
I love when historical fiction sings the praises of lost narratives. Martha Ballard was a small town midwife - her legacy being that she helped birth 1,000 babies without losing a mother. That's amazing odds, especially in the 1700's, when she was working. The tender way the author showed the love, respect, and intimacy with helping a woman have a baby was so moving. This was an enjoyable historical fiction. The mystery part does not play a big part in the novel. It's more about the life of the midwife main character, Martha Ballard and how she handles the challenges that come her way. I liked how I came away with a better understanding of what happens when a crime occurs during that time.

Immersive and compelling, this tale of a 18th century midwife is fiction based on a real person. It's dark, thoughtful, and sometimes difficult to read, but ultimately extremely important to read as well. The characters, including the frozen river and Winter itself, are well-drawn and the writing is impeccable. Ultimately it's a love song to a strong, mature woman who uses her skills and courage to help those around her. I suspect Martha's story will stay with me for a long time.

I really liked this book. I did figure some of the twists out. I love that it was based on the true story but had it's own story. I now really want to read more from this author.
