This was an enjoyable historical fiction. The mystery part does not play a big part in the novel. Immersive and compelling, this tale of a 18th century midwife is fiction based on a real person. The characters, including the frozen river and Winter itself, are well-drawn and the writing is impeccable. Ultimately it's a love song to a strong, mature woman who uses her skills and courage to help those around her. I suspect Martha's story will stay with me for a long time. ...more
