Immersive and compelling, this tale of a 18th century midwife is fiction based on a real person. It's dark, thoughtful, and sometimes difficult to read, but ultimately extremely important to read as well. The characters, including the frozen river and Winter itself, are well-drawn and the writing is impeccable. Ultimately it's a love song to a strong, mature woman who uses her skills and courage to help those around her. I suspect Martha's story will stay with me for a long time.

I loved everything about this book. How refreshing to be inside the mind of a powerful brilliant woman in 1790’s Maine. And a midwife no less!
