I loved this book. I would have rated it 4.5 if half stars were an option, but alas, goodreads is a whole number grading system.

It was slow at parts, but I loved it! The Beauty and the Beast likeness was reeeeaaaaaal and I was here for it. I already ordered the ready if the series (that’s out so far) and I can’t wait to pick up the second one.

A Court of Thorns and Roses is the first "new" book I've read in many, many years. The other books I've read this year have all belonged to a beloved series, so I went in expecting instant action and pain.

Instead, Sarah J. Maas treats us to a slow burn of suspense, world building, and romance - one that should never have been marketed as a YA novel. But that's a rant for a different time...

Feyre is a young woman whose spent the last few years caring for her father and two sisters. She's the only A Court of Thorns and Roses is the first "new" book I've read in many, many years. The other books I've read this year have all belonged to a beloved series, so I went in expecting instant action and pain.

Instead, Sarah J. Maas treats us to a slow burn of suspense, world building, and romance - one that should never have been marketed as a YA novel. But that's a rant for a different time...

Feyre is a young woman whose spent the last few years caring for her father and two sisters. She's the only thing standing between them and certain death, and one reckless decision puts her entire family at risk unless she agrees to travel to a strange, dangerous land with a shapeshifting fairy bent on vengeance.

The enemies-to-lovers trope was well-written, and the characters seemed to truly care about each other, even sacrificing themselves to save one another. Tamlin was complicated but kind, and he was patient with Feyre as she adjusted to her new life and his affections. Then entered The Morally Grey Anti-Hero...

I've always found it ridiculous that the initial, safe-seeming love interest is always a blond while the suave, brooding one always has dark hair. Always. It's as if the publishing world has a strict set of rules about possible love triangles, and any author who strays from them will be instantly ostracized.

Because of this, I instantly disliked Rhys. I knew what was going to happen and what romantic archetype he was meant to represent and it annoyed me, so much so that I almost knocked this down to a 4 star review. My dislike for him increased Under the Mountain when all of Tamlin's positive attributes seemed to disappear in a cloud of smoke so that he became the neutered, ineffectual male and Rhys was the only one helping Feyre.

Even with this complaint, I fell in love with this book. When a book is written well enough, and the world is built exotically enough, pitfalls can be ignored for the overall enjoyment of losing yourself in its world. A Court of Thorns and Roses is such a book, and I encourage lovers of fantasy and romance to crack open its pages when you have a spare few days because there's no way you're putting it down! ...more

Pada masa-masa awal aku mencoba menulis blog buku hingga merambah ke dunia bookstagram, aku memperhatikan betapa populernya serial ACOTAR. Saat itu bacaan non-mangaku hampir eksklusif sastrawi, dan aku kerap curiga pada kualitas buku-buku bestseller. Aku habis-habisan menghindari serial ini dan enggan memfollow akun yang memuat foto buku ini. Sepertinya aku nggak perlu menceritakan ulang garis besar alur plot ini, karena pasti banyak yang sudah tahu. Jadi, aku hanya akan membagi kesanku terhadap buku ini. Konon awal serial ini adalah semacam retelling dongeng Beauty and The Beast. Sayangnya, aku sama sekali lupa dongeng yang filmnya kutonton ketika masih bocah itu, lagipula waktu itu aku tidak mengerti ceritanya. Ternyata, aku cukup menikmati membaca buku ini. Aku suka betapa di dunia buku ini perempuan lazim menjadi pendekar, pemburu dan pemimpin kaum tertentu.

Meskipun begitu, ada saat-saat jenuh karena kegiatan di meja makan dan percobaan kabur serta keYOLOan Feyre dalam menghadapi aneka jenis peri berbahaya yang diulang-ulang. Alur lamban dan kebebalan Feyre yang ngeyel tetap melakukan sesuatu yang sudah diperingatkan berbagai pihak untuk tidak dilakukan membuat banyak pengulas di Goodreads menyerah pada 30% pembacaan. Membaca buku ini terasa seperti mengendarai roller coaster. Kadang aku merasa seperti membaca neo Twilight. Terlepas dari itu semua, cerita menjadi sangat seru dan bikin penasaran selepas 300 halaman pertama. Aku pun mulai mengerti kenapa Rhysand (yang kubayangkan memiliki suara seduktif Junichi Suwabe) sangat memikat banyak pembaca. Ini baru buku pertama! Konon dia akan semakin membuat termehek-mehek di sekuelnya.

Sedikit catatan tentang teknis pemilihan kata dalam buku ini: beberapa kata kerja yang digunakan penulis dan penerjemah untuk mendeskripsikan reaksi tokoh-tokoh buku ini terkesan primal, kalau bukan hewani. Contohnya: mendengkur dan menggeram layaknya kucing kecil dan besar. Dengan pemilihan kata-kata tersebut dan kemampuan berubah wujud beberapa peri agung, aku merasakan batas yang mulai lebur antara sifat kemanusiaan dan hewani yang memang termanifestasi dalam ras peri agung tersebut.

Berbekal kabar burung bahwa buku kedua akan jauh lebih seru dan aku akan sudah terlanjur “invested” di penghujung buku kedua kelak, aku berniat mengikuti serial ini dengan perasaan bercampur aduk.

Ngomong-ngomong, adegan resureksi itu kayaknya puitis banget deh. Aku jadi bisa memaafkan segala keputusan konyol Feyre di setengah pertama buku ini karenanya. ...more

More like a 3.5. I've only read Throne of Glass by this author so I'll be comparing them a bit. For the first 50% of ACOTAR I thought it wasn't as lively as Throne of Glass and I wondered if I wouldn't like it much. The Beauty And The Beast type scenario wasn't really my type, the world-building seemed lackluster and the world itself barren, and I was frustrated by Feyre's family and her devotion to them. Well I kept looking at this book but never in the mood to read. I did enjoy the world building, even if the main character was a little whiny to my taste, I can see how this would be a good script for a movie, but I think it had its time.

Was I entertained? Yes. Was this possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever read? Absolutely. Will I continue the series? Possibly. I’ll have to definitely be in the mood for something extra dumb. But sometimes, that’s what you’re looking for!
