Hello Team Narwhal!
How many of you had to look up what a Narwhal was? I thought I knew but wasn't completely sure so I did!
I'm Tammie and I'm joined by Melissa and Mahi...excited to be your captains for one of my favorite challenges!
I live in the St. Louis metro area. I have a husband and 2 grown children who provide me with grand-dogs so I can get my doggie-fix now and then :) I love to travel and read lots of books...
I find UNO fun, a great way to talk about books and learn about new authors. I think most of us have played before, but there are a few new to the UNOworld. Don't be afraid to ask any question...we're all waiting and willing to help you navigate UNO or even Goodreads if you need it.
I'd like to start us off with a few questions for each of us to share answers to if you choose.
📘 Introduce yourself, tell us how often you'll checkin - are you 'chatty' or more on the quiet side?
📗 What experience do you have with challenges/UNO
📒 If you have read for UNO before, share 1 tip/strategy with the group...once we've all shared we'll compile our list for a strategy
📕 Share a favorite book and the book you can't wait to read for UNO
PLS MARK THIS THREAD TO RECEIVE NOTIFICATIONS:)

📘 Introduce yourself, tell us how often you'll checkin - are you 'chatty' or more on the quiet side?
My name is Emma and I’m from Canberra, Australia. I’ll probably check-in close to daily as I do enjoy the group challenge threads. A chatty group is definitely more my kind of fun during these challenges.
📗 What experience do you have with challenges/UNO
I’ve done many group challenges in my years on Goodreads, with Tower Teams and Turf Wars as my favourites, however this is my first UNO (that I can remember at any rate 😂).
📒 If you have read for UNO before, share 1 tip/strategy with the group...once we've all shared we'll compile our list for a strategy.
I’m keen to see this list!!!
📕 Share a favorite book and the book you can't wait to read for UNO.
I don’t know that I have a favourite book tbh, but my favourite two authors are Brandon Sanderson and Daphne de Maurier, so many of their works are in my favourites. The book I’m looking forward to reading is Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals which is a non-fiction book on time management. It will be the first book I have read on the topic so I’m looking forward to it. Of course I’ve been keeping it to the side because of the blue cover.
I’m really looking forward to getting to know you all and having a fun group challenge 😀

📘 Introduce yourself, tell us how often you'll checkin - are you 'chatty' or more on the quiet side?
My name is Melissa, and I'm from the USA (Vermont) I'm a co-captain, and I also like a chatty thread :) I'll check in at least once a day, unless I have grades due...
📗 What experience do you have with challenges/UNO
I've done UNO once or twice - I've done Tower Teams and a non-fiction one, and Wheels, and Pandemic (that was a new one this year- very cool!) I love a good team challenge!
📒 If you have read for UNO before, share 1 tip/strategy with the group...once we've all shared we'll compile our list for a strategy
Hmmm... I guess don't over plan? I love to plan.... but! There's a mini in the middle of each month that can throw all plans out the window! This year I'm going to try to go to the library and just take a ton of books out and see what works :)
📕 Share a favorite book and the book you can't wait to read for UNO.
I like books with a bit of a dark edge, not too dark mind you! I loved Migrations - and am looking forward to another book by her.
For UNO?
Hmmmmmm...
Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World's Greatest Nuclear Disaster would be a good yellow. It's a bit long, but my reward is that I'll watch the show when I'm done.
I too am looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Woohoo Emma…welcome to UNO
There’s a 4Blue cards on our list for February…why don’t you put your book on there now and claim that spot!
@ALL…it’s fine to claim a few spots if you like. As Melissa has suggested it’s best to stick to what you’ll read for a week until the ‘mini’ shows up mid-month. Mini tasks can also be used for regular UNO…my UNO tip for us is…especially if you are a heavy reader to read longer books at the beginning of UNO. This saves your reading power for the mini when it’s especially needed :)

Welcome Jo…I think we’ve done a challenge or 2 together…I’m excited to read with you again :)

Hey all! I'm Jillian. from Michigan. I'm not on the chatty side but I will check in almost everyday. I'm not on too much on the weekends but when I'm doing a challenge I try to be.
📗 What experience do you have with challenges/UNO
This is my third year doing the UNO challenge and I usually always head into Tower Teams after. I've also participated in the Pass the Parcel challenge two years in a row. I always have a great time with these challenges.
📒 If you have read for UNO before, share 1 tip/strategy with the group...once we've all shared, we'll compile our list for a strategy
I don't really have a strategy and I'm not much of a planner.
📕 Share a favorite book and the book you can't wait to read for UNO
I have read too many great books to pick just one. But my top fave authors are Patricia Briggs and Kristen Ashley ! I was lucky enough to meet both over the summer at different book signings.

How fun to meet those authors! I think I have a few Briggs on my tbr but haven't read her. Kristen Ashley though...wow...is she as crazy as she writes? I like her although I have to be in the mood...most of her books are all about 100 pages longer than they have to be...my opinion. But I'm a rambler too so I'm not really complaining :)

She was definitely fun. Quite chatty, but very sweet. It was awesome I was lucky enough to sit at her table during the luncheon with the authors. Yes, her books can get quite lengthy.

Good Q JL and response is for @ALL
Feel free to add a few to the SS...I'd say because we are about 2 weeks from starting yet, let's limit to just 2 to start as quite a few of our teamies have yet to check in.
Your captains have discussed this and we suggest the following:
1. claim colored cards 1st. Let's let everyone have a chance at them...but feel free to claim if you've got something you've been saving especially for UNO...I claimed a yellow I've been holding on to
2. next REV and Draw 2. We are blessed to only have 4 Draw2 cards this round...yeah! REV are a priority because once we start working on the mini, it's harder to get those done.
Note: if you see someone's claimed a card for a book you've read and they haven't placed it on a REV card, feel free to speak up.
3. The more difficult cards...those tend to be I and V ...we have lots of both this round.
We aren't strict on these guidelines, but it will help our team if we all try to take these points in to account.
Now I've given several tips here...over my limit :( of 1 although I'll give Melissa equal credit :)
****Edited to add other tips from our team****
Jo: I like to know what book options I have on my shelf, or that I would like to read, that way I can work out what spots I'll take in the spreadsheet. Like I saw that there are eleven 9's, so I had a look at what books would fit that I am keen to read
From Melissa: I guess don't over plan? I love to plan.... but! There's a mini in the middle of each month that can throw all plans out the window! This year I'm going to try to go to the library and just take a ton of books out and see what works :)
Deb: I love that most books will work for something. As I am not one of those people that buy books, coloured books can be tricky as is I order the book from the library, they may not send the issue that has the coloured cover
Fallen’s tip: Reading Sprints on Booktube have been a game changer with sticking to reading when having a busy scheldule.
Jax: Read what you want. Nearly all books fit multiple categories, even non fiction

I'm Deb from Wallaroo, South Australia, a small beachside town on the Yorke Peninsula. I have two daughters in their twenties (one is studying in Dallas) and a dog that is like our third child. I have my own business so probably won't check in every day and I am a bit on the quiet side, but will try to contribute more than I have in the past.
📗 What experience do you have with challenges/UNO
This is my fourth UNO. I haven't done any other challenges. I love this challenge but as I don't read heaps of books, this is enough for me.

I'm still learning and understanding the rules, so I don't have an UNO-specific book picked out yet, but I have been really excited to read The Maid ever since I saw it in a bookstore and had to buy it! It does have a pretty red-dominant cover, so I'm not sure if that's something that we'll need for our first hand, but if so, someone please let me know!
Super excited to be doing this challenge with you all!

Hello I'm Jax. I live in the NW corner of the US. I tend to check in daily during the week and sporadically on weekends. I love books and book podcasts so if you have suggestions I'm all ears. I like to do these challenges to get book suggestions or warnings! (Everyone wants to talk about the books they love, but I also want to hear about terrible books so I know to steer clear.)
📗 What experience do you have with challenges/UNO
This is my third year of UNO. I love challenges and am almost always doing one kind or another.

I just finished Fredrik Backman's Beartown series. I am surprised how much I like it. I've been putting books on hold with the library for UNO. Looking forward to all those coming through.
(Oh, and my shelf for this challenge can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...)

Hi everyone, I'm Mahi, one of the co-captains! I read a lot of fantasy but branch into other genres a lot too. I'm usually pretty chatty, and check in almost every day on the weekdays.

One favorite book is so hard! But my most favorite read of 2022 was Project Hail Mary, and a book I'm looking forward to read is The Princess Bride, which is so classic but somehow I've always missed it.

I've found sticking to my quickest read genre(i.e. Romance for me) of books at the beginning of the month works best for me to meet my "quota" as much as possible before the mini challenge is issued since they seem to involve fantasy/classics fairly often which tend to take me a bit longer to read, so maybe that might help some of you too!
Bonus Tip: Reading Sprints on Booktube have been a game changer with sticking to reading when having a busy scheldule.
📕 Share a favorite book and the book you can't wait to read for UNO
The Outlander series will always be my favorite! I'm hoping to fit in Hell Bent(because after years of waiting it's finally here!!!) and a bunch of Indie books I was sent for reviews.
Can't wait to get to know y'all! Also if anyone ever wants to buddy read I'm always up for it to knock out some Reverse cards! (every book on my Want To Read shelf I currently own and have not read yet, so they're all up for grabs!)

There’s a 4Blue cards on our list for February…why don’t you put your book on there now and claim that spot!…
Oh great, will do 😀

I’m on the third in the Mistborn series. I’ve read the first in Stormlight Archive and loved it, it’s what got me onto Brandon Sanderson. I’ve yet to read the second (I got waylaid) but I really want to but I’ve probably got to read #1 again first as it’s been a few years. I think Warbreaker was my favourite of his, I adored that book.

Is Mistborn the best way to go if I want to start something? ..."
Yes, Warbreaker has been my absolute favourite!
I’ve enjoyed the Mistborn series and am on the third in the series, however it took some perseverance to get into the first book, I must admit. I found it a very slow, somewhat boring start, but once I got into it I’ve read the three books one after another without a break.
I’ve had the opposite experience with the Stormlight archive, I absolutely loooved the first book from the get go, but started the second book and got distracted and haven’t got back to the series.
So, it’s hard for me to say which is the best to start with. Stormlight is more military focused with a fantastic main character and some supporting PoV characters. Mistborn is more political and rebellion focussed, with a main female protagonist and a number of excellent supporting PoV characters. So, I would suggest go with whichever one more appeals 🙂
They are definitely easier to follow than Game of Thrones, I think Sanderson can world-build with the. Best of them without losing the reader in the complexity.
Mahi might have some thoughts on which Brandon Sanderson to try next?

For this month, we have one red card, but it is a red four. A red four needs to have a red cover and fit the 4 categories...
4 (Four)
Read a book that:
- has a 4 or Four in the title
- has a title starting with F
- has an author first name or surname starts with F
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with F
- is set in a place name starting with F
- is book 4 in a series
which makes it tricky!
You could read it now and fit it in somewhere else, like for a regular nine (as Nita is the author's first name), or Skip (as Prose is the author's last name)
or you could save it for a different hand where we might get a red skip, or a red nine. Either way is good though.
