What Members Thought

Wow, how things change. I read this again in eager anticipation of the movie, remembering how I devoured the book as a teen before eagerly moving on to The Lord of the Rings. I have heard people (notably Laura) say that they tried the Hobbit and couldn't get through it and I never understood. I do now. The writing is not where it was with LOR. The narration is clunky at best. And the story is a bit weak -- I can't imagine how Peter Jackson is making 9 hours of movies out of that book...

I will forever love this book. I read it for the first time in the 6th grade and have never looked back!
An epic story of Bilbo and his travels to defeat a dragon with a band of wandering dwarves. The story is obviously more complex than that, but that is the backbone story. I consider this an excellent tale of finding self-esteem and learning that you definitely have something to contribute to others.
I re-read it at least once a year, and will recommend it to everyone I know. I hope that my own ...more
