3.5 stars
Family and a heavy dose of magical realism figure into this tale of a small southern town and its people (and blackbirds). I was pulled in from the beginning but ended up a bit unsatisfied as the story lost its edge at the end. It just started feeling a little too sweet, with everything tied up a little too perfectly, and thus the rating.
There are romances within the book, but they are secondary to the main themes. The narrators did a good job, and the cover is gorgeous.

I really enjoyed this book. This uplit story was perfect for cold winter nights. It was a delightful mix of family secrets and dynamics with a charming small town and all the requisite quirky characters. There's just a touch of magic and folklore which add a whimsical storybook feel. I'm not usually one for magical but for this book it worked. I loved that all the characters grew and evolved alongside each other as they learned to trust. The author is excellent at painting the scene with concise

I enjoyed this story very much; it's not to heavy, not too light. It's a feel-good read.
