This was a yummy southern tale sprinkled with hearty characters and magical realism.

Family and a heavy dose of magical realism figure into this tale of a small southern town and its people (and blackbirds). I was pulled in from the beginning but ended up a bit unsatisfied as the story lost its edge at the end. It just started feeling a little too sweet, with everything tied up a little too perfectly, and thus the rating.

There are romances within the book, but they are secondary to the main themes. The narrators did a good job, and the cover is gorgeous.

I really enjoyed this book. This uplit story was perfect for cold winter nights. It was a delightful mix of family secrets and dynamics with a charming small town and all the requisite quirky characters. There's just a touch of magic and folklore which add a whimsical storybook feel. I'm not usually one for magical but for this book it worked.
