Book number 8 and it’s a Prequel. It takes place in early 1990. I am assuming “Fort Bird” is “Fort Bragg”
I am not sure why the author felt compelled to write this. Did he plan it from the first book? Book number 8 will be the story of Reacher and how he came to be what he is.....Or, did he run out of ideas and decided it was time for the reader to learn more about Reacher’s past.
New readers of the series should read this book first.
I have to say, this was disappointing. Especially after #7.

This prequel is supposed to show Reacher's reason for leaving the Army and justify his current aimless life but I'm not sure that I believed it. Reacher is not the naive type so I can't believe that until that case, he hadn't realized that there were assholes in the Army with their own agendas. That's not the kind of guy he is.

A Reacher prequel, before he became the tough-guy drifter. He's still in the army, and has some family members still around. He's just as tough, the heroine is just as unreachable, and the story just as fast-paced as the others. Nice touch with the bullet up the nose, I thought.
