I've read a fair amount of Neil Gaiman but somehow I missed his first novel. Like many of Gaiman's books there's a likable everyman protagonist who gets sucked down the rabbit hole, in this case into the "London Below". As usual in these stories the below-world is full of danger as well as excitement. For me what separates Gaiman from a lot of other UF is the wit and the literary references. I was a bit apprehensive about reading this book, because horror is a genre I normally steer clear of. But -- as I've often found to be the case with Gaiman's work -- this was enough on the edge that I was almost always ok. I would happily have skipped hearing about some of the things a few of the characters enjoyed eating, but I survived them.

As an urban fantasy dystopian novel it can do pretty much whatever it wants. Dead people revived; torture, death, mystery, odd characters doing odd things in odd ways; timeless, formless. At times gripping, well written, humorous. Good people are good. Bad people are evil. Some good inexplicably evil. Nauseating and malodorous London Under.

I read this book a few years ago, and it certainly stood up to re-reading! I was enthralled, enjoyed it thoroughly - as usual, I finished by saying, "wow, I love reading Gaiman's books."
