What Members Thought

From BBC Radio 4 - Classical Serial:
From the Novel by Hans Fallada. Dramatised for radio by Shelagh Stephenson
Primo Levi's declaration that Alone in Berlin is "the greatest book ever written about German resistance to the Nazis" is bold and unequivocal. English readers have had to wait 60 years to explore the 1947 novel in which Otto Quangel, a factory foreman (Ron Cook) and his wife Anna (Margot Leicester) believe themselves morally obliged to take on the full might of the Nazis.

Based on a true story, one couple fights Hitler's regime. Absolutely fantastic writing which kept me thinking about it long after I set the book down. I literally dreamed about sections of the book. Brilliant!

Oh, man. I thought I would never finish this book! Even though I find myself liking the book toward the last third, it was quite slow-going. But, to its credit, I think there was no other way to write about the horror that went on in Germany during WWII.

Incredible book.
Loosely based on the true story of a husband wife who wrote anti-Hitler postcards in WWII Berlin (and were caught and executed), this is a masterpiece. The translation is incredible--nowhere does the story seem awkward or confusing, as is so often the case.
The characters are memorable and distinct, even those that are less integral to the story. Over 500 pages, the story kept my interest. The multiple minor stories--Borkhausen, Enno and Eva Kluge, Trudel, the Heffkes, the Persic ...more

Unfortunately, I was not able to read the book in it's entirety due to a full work schedule. When I tried to renew it at the library for two more weeks, I was not allowed to because there was a waiting list. I just skimmed through about the last third of the book and read the ending to find out what happens. It is a gripping story and well told, but I found that the writing style was a little awkward.
