The Emperor’s Blades was one of my favorite debut novels in recent years. A fast-paced narrative and fantastic characterization (for most of the characters) made the pages fly by. The novel had a few issues particularly that the world-building was a little bit light and the only female character felt like a secondary consideration. After reading (and Loving!) the first book of this series I was in high anticipation of this book. I pre-ordered it and waited for it to come out. I was not disappointed, A great follow up to The Emperor's Blades. The continued adventures of Valyn, Kaden, and Adare. I liked this book 2, and there is much obvious progression in author skill and storytelling...but I like book 1 more. some key enjoyments include expanding and deepening some truly appealing characters and fleshing out some plot and subplot ideas. I am very curious about Valyn's tale and would read for that reason alone, though there is much more to the whole. I have been busy with projects and such and this book took a long time to finish. A part of me wonders if that is the reason I found the book hard to get into or if the writing just didn't connect with me as much.
