I struggled a bit with this story - it took quite a while (for me anyway) to finish this book - I am still interested enough to read the next one. Really 3.5 stars -

this book is just amazing, trudi canavan is an incredible author and just has this innate ability to make you feel every single emotion in the novel.
This second instalment of the Black Magician trilogy is more interesting that the first. It includes a minor climactic moment toward the end but like many "second-in-a-series" books it appears to me that the major purpose of the book is to allow the characters to develop sufficiently to set up a major climax in the third instalment.
Nevertheless I have enjoyed reading this instalment in the story and would delve straight into the third if I only had it on my TBR pile. (Shame on me for not having ...more

Great book, the characters and the world created are excellent. I had to go out and buy the final book in the trilogy soon after I read this.
