It is truly amazing, with all the vampire books I have been devouring lately, that it took me this long to read the one that kind of sets the standard for vampires.
The story is chilling in that wonderful , creepy Victorian way. More than the presence of the monster, what scares me the most is the sheer isolation of the place and time. The language is sometimes tough to get through but the story and the imagery is marvelous! My favorite part is near the beginning (when it is just opening to us) telling of Jonathan Harker's journey to Transylvania when he first meets Count Dracula and his stay in his castle. This is the meat and potatoes of the story. As I said before, the imagery is just breathtaking at this juncture of the novel. A must read

Modern vampires would do well to follow more closely in the path set by their collective great grandpa, (Count) Dracula. They are actually cool and potent and scary. Not downy cheeked drawling Southron gentlemen.
The book was pretty good: scary, moody, exciting, thrilling. The Count was menacing, the friendship and team work of the main characters was enjoyable. The whole diary thing was ok, although I wonder who writes their diary in such an openly narrative way? The only main quibble I have is ...more

I was disappointed with this book. It's a classic and I was expecting so much more from it. Van Helsings monologues ended up killing the book for me.
