I am rereading this book for my book club meeting 12/27/15
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Sissy Spacek. I had forgotten so much is the year or so since I read this. The audiobook is an excellent choice as Spacek is perfect!


This is an American classic that I just read for the first time. I have seen the film (probably more than once) and the film is very faithful to the book. The film gave me a visual version that played in my head as I read, which added to the experience. In 1935 rural A

*2019 review update- it’s fascinating to go back and read this review and find myself so wholly detached from it. The lyricism of the writing is still uncommonly fine, and she captures the inner lives of children in a rare and wonderful way, but critical rereads have made the great white savior complex of this book increasingly troublesome.
