*2019 review update- it’s fascinating to go back and read this review and find myself so wholly detached from it. The lyricism of the writing is still uncommonly fine, and she captures the inner lives of children in a rare and wonderful way, but critical rereads have made the great white savior complex of this book increasingly troublesome. I really enjoyed listening to this read by Sissy Spacek. I realized that if I read it when I was a kid I didn't remember very much. Scout Finch is a very special voice. So much to appreciate here. Vivid characters and timeless themes told in a personal and unpretentious way. ...more
