*2019 review update- it’s fascinating to go back and read this review and find myself so wholly detached from it. The lyricism of the writing is still uncommonly fine, and she captures the inner lives of children in a rare and wonderful way, but critical rereads have made the great white savior complex of this book increasingly troublesome. Read for bookclub -- I've read this before and found it overrated. Not so this time. Once I got beyond the looooong set up of the characters and location and the story gained momentum I loved it. Still an important story and deserving of the label "classic."

I really enjoyed listening to this read by Sissy Spacek. I realized that if I read it when I was a kid I didn't remember very much. Scout Finch is a very special voice. So much to appreciate here. Vivid characters and timeless themes told in a personal and unpretentious way.
