A pretty fun story that makes me want to watch the movie now. I like the characters and the humorous oddities of this book and will move on to the next book at some point. However, keep in mind that the story is pretty cheesy. You definitely have to be in the right frame of mind to read it.

Confession: I’ve never seen the Ghibli adaptation of this book. Okay, with that terrible truth out of the way, I can say that I really enjoyed this whimsical little fantasy novel! The characters are very fun, the comedy works, and the dynamics between the little gang in the castle were delightful. I didn’t totally buy some of the ending, which felt as if it came out of nowhere, but that is definitely a taste thing. I cannot believe that it took me three years after buying this book to actually read it! I was thoroughly charmed by the story of Sophie all the way through. From meeting Howl himself (a most unlikely looking evil Wizard) to achieving the required happy ending, the book kept up the pace. The author (I confess, this is the first of her books I have read) has a gentle sense of humor that was never mean. I'm picky about fantasy, especially if aimed at younger readers.
