What Members Thought

Read The Handmaid's Tale they told me, You'll love it since you like dystopian so much. Margaret Atwood is such an amazing author they told me, You'll love her. All of you that said that to me..You lied right through your damn teeth. Did your nose grow any as you were saying this to me? This is the worst dystopian novel I have ever read. It was boring, dry, and over descriptive. I knew I was in trouble when I read the first 30 pages and had no idea what I read because I think I lost consciousnes

I read this as more allegorical/parable than necessarily believing that this exact situation really could happen in the United States much less Cambridge, MA. I understand the desire to reference the puritanical past but modern MA especially Cambridge seems like a unlikely headquarters for a theocracy. (view spoiler)

This book was amazing! I have been wanting to read this for a very long time. It is hard to believe that this dystopian type world was created in someone's mind when I was just a child. Some parts of the book were a little bit hard to read, as they made me feel a tad bit uncomfortable, but the story needed to be told that way, and I embraced the discomfort. Now I can finally watch the series on Netflix.

Wow is all I can say. Are we sure Margaret Atwood doesn't have access to a time machine?? She describes so eloquently the way a group can take over a society during a time of crisis and the way various people adapt. There are so many parallels to what is happening in the U.S. right now, I certainly hope this fictional fantasy novel doesn't become true.

Really 3.5 but it was better than 3 stars so I'm giving 4 :)
I'm not sure what I was expecting when I picked up this book but it definitely wasn't what I read. This is such an interesting concept. The book is the story of a nameless woman who lives during a time when men rule the world and women are used strictly for reproduction. The interesting thing to me is the fact that this world is the result of women being unable to have children due to radiation, cancer, abortion, and all of the terrible ...more

Imagine a US where the government has literally been blown up and organized religion has taken over. Where if you don't convert you're killed. Where radiation has made most of the population infertile and young women are enslaved to become "walking wombs".
This is the story of one such woman, Offred. The memories of her former life are heartbreaking and the only way out seems to be death, by her own hand or theirs. ...more
