A very interesting read about a teenage girl who is basically left to fend for herself after her parent's divorce. What is wrong with people? And why do people like this have children? Lots of children?

I have much admiration for the author, who is not only a great cook, but who is also someone who goes against the grain by choosing a lifestyle and relationship, that frankly, had me scratching my head at times. Such an interesting book, and a book I came to have a complex relationship with. I simultaneously loved and loathed the author, shaded in turn by each chapter. The "Where are the women?" chapter is fantastic--5 stars+ for that. But then I kind of begin to think in other chapters "this woman really needs help working out issues with her mom and her past." I appreciated so much about the book in general, and am having great conversations about it with friends. ...more

While Hamilton's interpersonal relationships are somewhat odd even by chef standards, her affection for simple, delicious food comes through strongly and she can turn a nice phrase. That said, it lacks the level of self-reflection that turns memoirs from good to great. ...more
