I thought I might see glimpses of the brilliance that was to come with Melville. I didn't find much. Still, it's an interesting piece of mid-19th century travel/adventure/colonial mindset writing. Lots of exoticization of the female Marquesans...but I'm not going to type it all out.
Typee was finished by Autumn 1845; Moby Dick first published in 1851.
