High Wind in Jamaica was first published in 1929 as The Innocent Voyage. It was Hughes’ first novel -- he was 29. As it turned out, Hughes was not a prolific writer and is often used as an example when discussing writer’s block. He would go on to write, prior to World War II, a good Conradian sea novel (In Hazard) and then, in 1960, the much later - and admired - Fox in the Attic. Hughes died in 1975. I picked up this reissue partly because the NYRB imprint is a mark of distinction, but also because I knew it involved children and pirates, and finally, because I think part of me had it mixed up with the Daphne du Maurier book, Jamaica Inn. I think I must have been thinking of it as a period adventure yarn, little realizing what a strange little book it is. In the introduction to this edition, the writer Francine Prose calls it a "fever dream" and that's the perfect term. It is a period advent ...more

An odd, canny tale of children at play with pirates. Nails the psychology of children, and many other things, in a moment far earlier than assumed. Fun.
