This year's group of 7th graders mandated a more dramatic/superficial reading of Shakespeare than I typically want to do (you know I love me some literary analysis), and - shock! - as a result, the play was so much more enjoyable to read. I didn't have to get hung up on the figurative language, because I would just point it out if we came across obvious examples. I didn't worry about theme, or motifs, or BIG IDEAS or WHAT COMMENTARY WAS SHAKESPEARE MAKING ABOUT WOMEN?!

I actually think of it as a special event to re-read literature, especially works that may have been a rushed read in school. As I begin a read like this, I know that, in some way, I will understand something more or something in a different way from the story than I did in my earlier days. Midsummer was one of those reads for me, and I really now see why this play is such a general favorite and so often performed.
