A collection of Sherlock Holmes short stories. These are so witty and irreverent and clever! I especially appreciate how Dr Watson feels so real, as if he really is a person writing about a friend. ...more

I read some of these stories as a small child, in a pocket Penguin classic version that cost $1.50 or $2. I remember a couple of them very vividly - particularly the one about the speckled band and the one about the lady in the electric blue dress and her coil of chestnut brown hair. These two filled me with horror, and in retrospect, I now realise why - it is because they are stories about single women put in very difficult circumstances (usually involving isolation).
