What Members Thought

If there really is such a thing as a book prescription, then this was such a book for me. I was looking for an atmospheric British classic with a bit of a romance, and that is exactly what I got. I've enjoyed Jane Eyre and Villette by Anne's sister Charlotte Brontë (and Wuthering by Emily Brontë was an ok book for me), but I'd never tried this author before. Those Bronte ladies were all wizards with the pen. I feel I should read everything written by any of them at this point.

For the most part I liked this book. There were some parts and themes that I really enjoyed and others that left me scratching my head. I was so impressed with the heroine, Helen Graham. Her ability to leave her terrible husband and seek out and find a better life for herself and her son is something to cheer. And yay for Anne Bronte for developing this woman. 3.5 stars really. I liked the writing, and I can see how the subject matter certainly would have shocked people at the time it was published. I definitely saw the influence of Charlotte in this book.
My reason for not giving it a full 4 star sis that I felt that the middle portion of the book was too long.

This one would have gone down better had I not chosen to listen to it as an audiobook - by the end I was getting bogged down in the continual reiteration of the book's themes and I just wanted it to wrap up already. Still, a classic and worth the time for it.
