My first Murakami, and I thought that it was great. The book was easy to read, complex and very gripping. I became caught up in the various characters and trying to figure out what was going on.
I am looking forward to reading more Murakami in the future.

A strange yet mesmerizing work of fiction. Has a hint of magical realism to it. Murakami's deceptively simple prose grabbed me immediately and I couldn't put the book down for the first 300 pages. It dragged a bit after that and got to a point where it became so wacky that my suspension of belief began to waver. Nevertheless, it picked up again and ended strongly. It's definitely one of the most unique books I've ever read. I look forward to trying out some of his other works.

I read 2/3 of this, am now giving up. I used to be able to stomach random 1990s nihilism, and I like some of Murakami's other work, but after a very slow start, a pick-up in the second section, and a completely mundane but violent and silly set of issues throughout, I just need to be done now. I have a long list of better stuff to read.

Like many of Murakami's books they start out great and after about 400 pages you realize they are going nowhere. You could stop half-way through and accomplish just as much as you would if you finished it.
