Being a huge fan of Sister Carrie, this Dreiser title was not what I expected it to be at all. And now that I'm finished, I can't believe anyone in their right mind would call AT Dreiser's masterpiece over SC. It doesn't make any sense!
Still liked it, esp. the classically Drieser details of how 19th century towns work, the legal system, high society, moral abysses. But if you read a Dreiser, read Sister Carrie. Hands down still my favorite novel of the late 19th c. ...more
