This book was great. I didn't like it.
What I mean to say is I got the impression I wasn't quite sophisticated enough for it. I had such high hopes for my first Percy. And it was all the things I knew it would be — well-written, character-driven, intelligent. All the things I usually love in a book.
There were good bits, bits of truth, and a strong sense of Place that is the mark of all good southern literature. But they were just too spread out for me to have as much impact as it could have.

I read this book many years ago and reread it recently when it was available for cheap for kindle for the fiftieth and something anniversary. I love Walker Percy and his weaving of his interest in philosophy into his novels. The Moviegoer is about loneliness and isolation and existentialism in the midst of friends, lovers, family.
