This second installment in the Inheritance Cycle was extremely surprising for me. I find it hard to be surprised by most book endings, and this one had a twist that I was not looking for, so when it jumped out at me, I was almost knocked out of my chair with shock. This book goes much deeper into the world of Alagaesia, its myths and history, and the characters become much more complex. I felt for Eragon as his attempts at romance are spurned, and watched carefully as his bond with Saphira deepe

It did not live up to my expectations. I find myself not liking the main character.

Eldest surpasses Eragon in every way; the writing is more fluid, the characters are more nuanced, and the story more compelling. This tale of high fantasy follows Eragon and Saphira as they become the heroes that everyone expects them to be. But, what makes the book compelling is the story of Eragon’s cousin, Roran, and his quest to find his lost love and free his village. Add in the mysterious Murtagh and a massive final battle and the book is well worth the read.
