It's all setting and plot, but what a cleverly conceived mash-up of noir police procedural, philosophical treatise, and exploration of cultural anomie. The characters are paper thin, caricatures really, but hey, not every book has to be more than a diversion and this is more diverting and smarter than most.

I can't understand why Christopher Nolan hasn't optioned the film rights, it would fit right in with his long time obsession with epistemological ambiguity, not to mention the opportunity for
