I'm not sure what I can say about this novel that hasn't already been said or written. It's mythical in its status as THE book of China Miéville's to read. It's won or been nominated for a crap-tonne of awards. And it's way smarter than me, or at least, Inspector Tyador Borlú of the Extreme Crime Squad of Beszel is way smarter than me.

A good melding of detective noir and fantasy and since I have never read Mieville before and have done some digging, I get the sense that this is very unlike most of his other works. The story takes place in two cities that share the same geography that have split where the people of each city learn to unsee one another. It is a detective story that tracks the case of a dead woman killed in one city and dumped in the other. Full of dark Chandler-esque drama, plot twists, and a lot to ponder. It ...more

Crime, mystery, thriller, noir.

The strength of this novel is definitely the intriguing worldbuilding of the cities. The characters, however, are fairly standard-issue, with too many superfluous names.
