Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson is a dense, action-packed, and engrossing fantasy novel. It begins, seemingly, in the middle of the story of the Malazan Empire. The reader is plunged into a new and massive fantasy world from the beginning, and without any buildup. Very early on we are introduced to a large cast of characters and the siege of a major city by the empire.

Wow, well this one took a while to get into, and I really struggled to work out what was going on for a while. Not helped I suspect by being on holiday and expecting a much simpler read. Keeping all the characters in my head was a challenge, and the author certainly was expecting the reader to do a lot of the work, which for me was a problem early on.

I had a hard time following this. Maybe because I was listening to it in bread if reading it, but it just seemed like a bunch of people running around and fighting. I think I'm missing an connection in why is matters and how they're all connected.
